The Central Securities Clearing System Plc (CSCS Plc) on Thursday concluded a two-day workshop on Central Securities Depository/Capital Market Operations for officers of the Nigerian Police Force in Lagos as part of CSCS contribution towards supporting the fight against financial theft in the Nigerian Capital Market.
Speaking at the opening session of the workshop, Mr. Joe Mekiliuwa, General Manager, Operations, CSCS, said that the intended objective of the workshop was aimed at exposing the participants to the operations of CSCS in the capital market and market dynamics so as to assist them in carrying out Capital Market related investigations successfully and improve collaboration between CSCS and the Nigerian Police Force.
According to Mekiliuwa, “this training has become necessary in order to collectively fight criminals in the capital market by sharing with you information you need to know about the operations of CSCS that will assist in your investigations on capital market related cases. And at the same time foster the relationship between our organization and the Nigerian Police Force”.
He therefore encouraged the officers not to see the workshop as a mere academic exercise but as a practical hands-on-deck approach such that it would help in improving their understanding of the capital market operations.
The workshop was facilitated by distinguished and seasoned professionals from the Operations Department of the organization. Issues ranging from the company’s role, trading, Clearing and Settlement Process, settlement of trade, methods of share transfer and transmission, purchase of shares through the primary and secondary market, efforts by the market to curb sharp practices were adequately covered.
Responding on behalf of the participants after the two-day workshop, Mr. Yusuf Abdulrazaq (CSP) commended the Management of CSCS for organizing the workshop which he said had broadened their knowledge about the operations of the capital market and he urged CSCS not to rest on their oars but to continue to organize such workshop in the future.
The participants at the workshop who were drawn from Lagos Zone 2 Command, Onikan, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Area A Command, Lion Building, and Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Ikoyi were presented certificates of merit and attendance.
